Every few months someone announces that SEO is dead. This time the murder weapon is AI. Google answers questions with AI Overviews, AI Mode has been live in the UK since summer 2025, and half your customers now ask ChatGPT before they ask Google. So naturally, the internet has filled up with the AI SEO course: shiny, urgent, and usually promising “secret prompts” that will get you cited by robots by Friday.
Some of these courses are useful. Plenty are old SEO with a new sticker and a higher price. This guide shows you what AI SEO training should actually teach, what’s pure snake oil, and how to tell which one you’re looking at before you hand over your card details.
What an AI SEO Course Should Actually Cover
“AI SEO” gets used for two very different things, and most course sales pages blur them on purpose.
- SEO for AI search: getting your brand seen, cited and recommended inside AI answers. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot. This is the bit people also call GEO, or generative engine optimisation.
- Using AI to do SEO: speeding up keyword clustering, briefs, audits, schema and reporting with AI tools, without publishing beige rubbish at scale.
A decent course covers both. A great one is honest that the first depends almost entirely on getting the basics right. That’s exactly how we built our AI SEO and GEO course: AI search on top of solid foundations, not instead of them.
The bit nobody wants to hear
Google’s own guidance for site owners says there are no special tricks for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same fundamentals apply: crawlable pages, helpful content, clear structure, a site Google trusts. If a course opens with “forget everything you know about SEO”, close the tab. The people winning in AI search are, overwhelmingly, the people who were already good at normal search.
So if you’re brand new, an AI-first course is the wrong starting point. Learn how search works first, ideally through something like our SEO foundations course, then add the AI layer. If you’re not sure where you sit, our guide on how to learn SEO lays out the order we’d tackle it in.
The Core Modules of Good AI SEO Training
Here’s the syllabus we’d want to see. If a course skips more than one of these, it’s a webinar with ambitions.
1. How AI search engines find and choose sources
You need a working model of how answer engines pick what to quote. Most retrieve a handful of pages from a search index, then summarise. That means your page still has to be indexed, still has to rank somewhere sensible, and still has to answer the question cleanly enough to be lifted. A course should explain retrieval, citation and why a page that ranks seventh can still get quoted while the page ranking first gets ignored.
2. Writing content that gets cited, not just ranked
AI answers love pages that say the thing plainly. Direct answers near the top of a section, clear definitions, honest comparisons, specific numbers with sources. Waffle doesn’t get quoted. Neither does the 400-word intro about the history of the internet. This is where proper SEO content writing earns its keep.
3. Entities, structure and schema
AI systems need to understand who you are, what you sell and why anyone should believe you. Consistent brand information, clear authorship, sensible site structure and structured data all help machines join the dots. Schema isn’t a magic AI switch, whatever LinkedIn says, but it removes ambiguity, and our schema markup course shows you how to do it without breaking anything.
4. Technical access for AI crawlers
Lots of sites block AI crawlers by accident, or let everything through without deciding whether they want to. A good course explains robots.txt rules for the different bots, the difference between training crawlers and search crawlers, and why JavaScript-heavy pages can be invisible to some of them. If that paragraph made your eyes water, start with our technical SEO course.
5. Brand mentions and authority
AI answers lean heavily on what the wider web says about you. Reviews, press, industry roundups, forum threads, comparison pages. That makes digital PR and reputation part of SEO again, which is why link building training belongs in any serious generative engine optimisation syllabus. Links still matter. Unlinked mentions in the right places matter more than they used to.
6. Measuring AI visibility
This is the messy one, and any course that pretends otherwise is fibbing. AI referral traffic often arrives looking like direct traffic, AI Overview clicks are lumped into normal Search Console data, and “AI rank tracking” tools are still young. You should leave knowing how to spot AI referrals in GA4, how to sample prompts manually, and how to report the lot to a boss without making things up. Our SEO analytics course handles the Search Console and GA4 side properly.
Using AI to Do SEO (Without Embarrassing Yourself)
The second half of any decent AI SEO training is practical: getting AI tools to do the grunt work so you can do the thinking.
- Keyword research: clustering thousands of terms by intent in minutes, then checking the clusters against real SERPs. The checking is the skill. Our keyword research course teaches the judgement the tools can’t.
- Briefs and outlines: AI drafts the skeleton, you add the experience, opinions and proof it can’t invent.
- On-page fixes: drafting title tags and meta descriptions at scale, then editing every one. Pair this with solid on-page SEO basics so you know a good one when you see it.
- Schema and code snippets: generating JSON-LD fast, then validating it, because AI will happily invent properties that don’t exist.
- Audits and reporting: summarising crawl exports and spotting patterns humans would miss at 4pm on a Thursday.
The trap is mass-producing content. Google is clear that using AI to churn out pages mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. Using AI to help write genuinely useful pages is fine. If you want to write with AI and still sound like a human with a pulse, our AI copywriting course is built for exactly that.
Red Flags: How to Spot a Rubbish AI SEO Course
The AI gold rush has attracted the usual prospectors. Walk away if you see:
- Guaranteed AI citations. Nobody controls what an AI model says. Nobody.
- “SEO is dead” positioning. It’s a sales tactic, not a strategy.
- Secret prompt packs as the main deliverable. Prompts are free and go stale in weeks.
- A single magic file or tag sold as the answer to AI visibility. If it sounds too easy, it is.
- No measurement module. If they can’t show you how to track results, they can’t prove theirs either.
- Last updated in 2024. AI search moves monthly. A course that hasn’t been refreshed this year is a history lesson.
For the wider checklist on judging any provider, our guide on how to choose an SEO course applies just as well to AI-flavoured ones.
Who Should Take an AI SEO Course (and When)
Complete beginners: not yet. Learn the fundamentals first, then bolt the AI layer on. You’ll understand it twice as fast.
Working marketers and SEOs: yes, now. Clients and bosses are already asking “are we showing up in ChatGPT?” and you want a better answer than a nervous laugh. If you’re also eyeing deeper skills, our rundown of advanced SEO courses shows where AI search fits into the bigger picture.
Business owners: a short, practical course is worth it so you can tell good advice from expensive nonsense. If you’d rather hand the work over, our consulting team can audit your AI visibility and tell you what’s actually worth fixing.
And on price, don’t let the letters “AI” double the bill. The same rules apply as for any training, which we’ve broken down in our SEO training cost guide. Pay for depth, recency and practical work, not buzzwords.
How to Learn AI SEO Without Wasting Months
Our recommended order, if you want results rather than a certificate collection:
- Weeks 1-4: SEO fundamentals. How search engines crawl, index and rank. Non-negotiable.
- Weeks 5-6: keyword research, on-page and content. The stuff AI answers are built from.
- Weeks 7-8: AI search specifics. Citations, entities, AI crawlers, prompt sampling.
- Ongoing: pick 20 questions your customers ask, check what AI tools say each month, and improve the pages that should be cited but aren’t.
Then tie it all together with a plan. Tactics without priorities is just busywork, which is what an SEO strategy course fixes. You can see every module we offer, AI and otherwise, on our SEO courses page.
AI SEO Course FAQs
Is an AI SEO course worth it in 2026?
Yes, if you already understand SEO basics and want to stay visible as search shifts to AI answers. If you’re starting from zero, do a foundations course first, because AI search visibility is built on the same fundamentals as classic SEO.
What’s the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO is about ranking in search results. GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is about being cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers from tools like Google AI Mode and ChatGPT. In practice they overlap heavily: most GEO wins come from strong SEO plus clear, quotable content and a well-known brand.
Can a course guarantee my site appears in AI Overviews?
No. Nobody controls what AI systems choose to cite, and Google says there are no special optimisations required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A good course improves your odds and teaches you to measure progress. Anyone promising guarantees is selling hope.
How long does it take to learn AI SEO?
With solid SEO basics, you can get to grips with the AI-specific parts in a few weeks of focused learning. Starting from scratch, allow around two months to cover the fundamentals and the AI layer properly, then keep practising, because AI search changes fast.
Do I need to know how to code to learn AI SEO?
No. You’ll need to understand robots.txt, structured data and how pages render, but you won’t be building anything from scratch. Knowing enough to check what an AI tool generates is the real skill.
